Tour.City Walk
The classic. Our historical city tour through the city center offers insights into the fascinating and eventful history of the Lion City. Braunschweig was first documented almost 1000 years ago, and around 850 years ago, Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, and his wife Matilda of England made the city their residence. We stroll through medieval alleyways and discover traces of the Hanseatic merchants and the Welf dynasty, who shaped Braunschweig for centuries, in historic squares.
Tour.Medieval
Patricians, executioners and bone cutters. On this tour, we bring the fascinating medieval city of Braunschweig back to life in its alleys, tweten and Klinten. In the Middle Ages, Braunschweig was an important trading city and a member of the Hanseatic League. Under the Welf Duke Henry the Lion, it developed into a powerful and influential city in the 12th century. Five districts – Altstadt, Hagen, Neustadt, Altewiek and Sack – formed the city area. The economy flourished, in part through trade in cloth, salt, metal, and mumme. Magnificent buildings such as St. Blasius Cathedral, Dankwarderode Castle, or the splendid old town market with its imposing buildings bear witness to this golden age.
Tour.Aegidien
Brunones, saints, and monks. Hidden in the heart of Braunschweig’s city center is a place rich in history and stories: the former Benedictine monastery of St. Aegidien. Our new city tour takes you on a journey through time from the early Middle Ages to the Age of Enlightenment – exciting, touching and full of surprises. You meet Gertrude the Younger, the last Brunonine, who was not only a noblewoman but also the founder of a monastery. You will learn how the Benedictine monks lived, prayed and worked in the cloisters – according to clear rules, with fixed rituals and a very unique worldview.
We offer our city tours in German, English and Spanish.
