Our medieval tour. On our tour, we bring the fascinating medieval city of Braunschweig back to life in its alleyways, streets and caves. In the Middle Ages, Braunschweig was an important trading town and a member of the Hanseatic League. Under the Guelph Duke Henry the Lion, it developed into a powerful and influential city in the 12th century. Five districts – Altstadt, Hagen, Neustadt, Altewiek and Sack – made up the city area. The economy flourished through trade in cloth, salt, metal and mumme, among other things. Magnificent buildings such as St. Blasii Cathedral, Dankwarderode Castle and the magnificent old town market with its imposing buildings bear witness to this heyday.
Discover with us unique half-timbered houses that have long since disappeared, medieval market squares and an ancient, still preserved and hidden battlements. We will follow in the footsteps of rich patrician families and hard-working bonecutters. And we learn where the Braunschweig executioner lived and what he had to do with the “oldest trade” in the world.
Our walk begins at the historic Bäckerklint. We then find out what the Flohwinkel is all about. Passing the venerable Martino-Katharineum grammar school with its famous pupils, we head across the medieval Altstadtmarkt and the historic Eiermarkt to Jakob-Kemenate. Now it’s not far to Knochenhauerstraße. After a short stop, the tour continues into the picturesque Michaelisviertel, which has its own exciting stories to tell. The tour ends at the medieval battlement, which has its own hidden story to tell.
