The city also looks back on almost a thousand years of history. We’ll take you on a journey through time, where you’ll not only marvel at the famous sights but also delve into the lesser-known corners that define the true character of this city.

The starting point is the picturesque Magniviertel. Passing the unique Rizzi House, the first stop is in front of the Braunschweig Residenzschloss. From there, we continue to the Platz der Deutschen Einheit. Our tour then takes us via the Burgplatz, with Braunschweig’s landmark, the lion, the Dankwarder.
At the end of the tour, we will visit the historic square at the Martini Church and the historic Old Town Market together.

Our walk begins at Bäckerklint. We then pass the venerable Martino Katharineum Gymnasium, cross the Altstadtmarkt and Eiermarkt, and then through Knochenhauerstraße into the picturesque Michaelisviertel.

Betrayal, suffering
and hope

Tour.Hope

Together we’ll explore the traces this dark era of history left behind in the 1930th/1940th in our city. Braunschweig was the scene of great destruction, profound changes, and events that are still visible and tangible today in buildings, streets, and stories.

On our tour, we want to not only shed light on the historical facts, but also remember the people and fates who lived, suffered and resisted here during these years.

Let us work together to examine this depressing period in the city’s history in order to understand it and remember it.

St.
Martini

Tour.Martini Church

Right in the heart of Braunschweig, at the historic Altstadtmarkt, stands an impressive landmark of the city: St. Martin’s Church. If you want to embark on a journey through the centuries, you can’t miss this historic building. The church not only tells of faith and architecture, but also of the people who have shaped Braunschweig.

The origins of St. Martini Church date back to the 12th century. Built as a Romanesque basilica, it has been expanded and rebuilt several times over the centuries. The Gothic influence is unmistakable: the mighty towers and magnificent pointed arches bear witness to an architectural heyday that helped shape Braunschweig as a trading city.

Brunswick
and the Hanseatic League

In preparation ...

Although the Hanseatic League primarily brings to mind Hamburg, Lübeck, or Bremen, Braunschweig has always played an important role in the powerful trading alliance of the Middle Ages. With our city tour, which we are currently developing, we will take you on an exciting journey through Braunschweig’s Hanseatic history. Interesting content will include:

  • How did the city become a member of the Hanseatic League?
  • What exactly is Mumme?
  • Are there still traces of this time to be discovered?

In 2027, Braunschweig will host the International Hanseatic Day. It’s high time, as the last European Hanseatic Day in Braunschweig took place in 1427, exactly 600 years ago! We’re looking forward to welcoming all of Europe to Braunschweig.
